I didn't take my first singing lesson until I was 10 yrs old, but was born with a song in my heart. My first performance memory is as a four year old singing along with the radio. I began to put on ad hoc performances for my parents and their friends singing my favorite songs from the radio playlists. I was born and raised in Antioch. My parents were originally fans of classic rock, but as I began to take control of my repertoire, I veered them towards country and to pop divas like Brittney Spears, Christina Aguilera, and Shania Twain. As a child, I would do more than put on mini-concerts, I would do complete performances dancing, singing, and putting on extemporaneous music videos. When my parents finally realized how serious I was about singing and performance, they started entering me in to various competitions, talent shows, private parties, and weddings. Read more here...

Deer Valley grad opts for music

Jessica Caylyn, a 2010 Deer Valley High graduate has embarked on a country rock career
As a young girl Antioch's Jessica Caylyn remembers singing favorite songs for her family. Eventually her parents saw something in her singing ability that led them to believe she had enough talent to take her playtime into the big time.
The years of voice lessons, entering contests and singing the national anthem at Giants and A's baseball games have paid off for the recent Deer Valley High School graduate with the chance to produce her first album and setting a tour throughout California over the next coming months.
"I have been really lucky to have supportive parents who never pushed and let me do what I wanted to do," Caylyn said.
**When she was 17, Caylyn searched for a producer to help set her career in motion. "I met my producer on MySpace, when MySpace was still the place to go," she said. "Luckily, this producer was very genuine and a lot of help. Best of all he was reasonable priced, which was also important." The producer helped get her set up in Nashville working to put together her own album. He also set her up with songwriters and musicians. Eventually she decided, however, that she wanted to use most of the songs she had written herself. After a couple of more trips to Nashville, her first album was ready to promote.
"I couldn't wait to get out of high school so I could focus full time on performing, writing more songs, and learning more about the music business," she said. "I've met such fantastic people in the studio, working with other musicians, and of course, the audiences. It's even better than I could have imagined," she said.
**Simultaneously, after graduating from Deer Valley High in 2010, Caylyn decided it was time to take the next step in her career and set out to find a local band of her own to work with. "I knew I really needed to get a band together if I wanted to be something more than a singer/songwriter," she said. She spent months researching and auditioning band members until she finally found the members who would make up "The Jessica Caylyn Band." Over the past year, Caylyn and her band have been working on a style and picking out cover tunes to play for audiences.
Her local manager has been working to set up gigs in the Bay Area and the Central Valley with her first latest gig being played Saturday at the Valencia Club in Penryn and the following Saturday at Mandango's in Roseville.
"People say I have a quirky personality, and I like that," the singer said. "They don't always know what to expect out of me, but I always feel connected with them. It's like we're all having fun, and I'm comfortable being spontaneous."
During the concerts Caylyn will be promoting her album "On the Edge." The album features a county-rock sound, which her producers say is described as "soulful like Adele with the country storytelling and wide range of Martina McBride." Over the past few months, a single from the album "Just Can't Help Myself" has been featured on many radio stations as part of her promotional tour.
**The album and individual is available through iTunes, Amazon and ReverbNation. A CD version of the album is also available at her concerts.
**correction: The reporter reversed the actual timeline. At 17 yrs old, she formed her band. After graduating, she made her trip to Nashville when she met her producer. She recorded a 4 song EP, not an album.

Review of On the Edge EP
Jessica Caylyn is the best of both worlds. She has roots in a Nashville, Tennessee sound working with some of Nashville’s finest. But her music is also full of California’s sunny adult contemporary pop. She is based in California and looks like the epitome of a dream California girl. Fans of Taylor Swift, Shania Twain, Linda Ronstadt and Jewel will quickly add Jessica Caylyn to their list of favorites.
Track #1 – Just Can’t Help Myself – You will not be able to help yourself from singing along with this crowd pleaser. Jessica’s vocals come in early in the song and grab you with their combination of country soul and city sophistication. The melodic chorus with sweet harmonies blends perfectly with Jessica’s powerful voice and the clear satisfying guitar work.
Track #2 – Shine – Starting in with compelling deep guitar work, this is a ballad that really showcases Jessica’s voice. The song is heartfelt as well as upbeat and is polished to a true shine.
Track #3 – Should Be Over You – Sassy strength and rocking guitars permeate this song that anyone who is forging the strength to get over someone can relate to. This is a perfect song to be singing along with as you hear it on the radio tearing through traffic. You will not soon get over the perfect catchy hook that will stick in your mind after hearing it once. Like Jewel, Jessica Caylyn combines strength and vulnerability effortlessly.
Track #4 – I Don’t Mind (bonus track) – The powerful poignant lilting melody and strong vocals of this song reminds me of a new young Linda Ronstadt. You won’t mind listening to this song over and over to both sooth and move you. I can see an arena with the crowd all swaying to this song.
